Seems appropriate that a group of sailors would also power their website with wind.

ABOUT OUR NEW WEBSITE

Welcome to the brand new West Bay Yacht Club website. After the success of last year's Racing Pages website it was decided that the entire club could make good use of the communication and publicity enjoyed by the racers with the Racing Pages. The Racing Pages devoted a separate section to each race or series and provided for Notices of Race, Sailing Instructions and entry forms before the races; and results and photos of each race afterwards. The site was heavily used and recorded over 3000 visits during the racing season.

This website is the club-wide growth of that site. It will devote a page, if not multiple pages, to each activity, cruise, and education event throughout the year in addition to the races, as you can see from the menu to the left. Already you should check on the activities, holiday party and annual dinner pages to see the photos from this past year's events and some from the 1990's.

The intention is to always keep this site current and up-to-date. To that end we need everyone's assistance in providing photos, stories and announcements. Just send them to the webmaster and he promises to post them quickly.

As of this posting the site is far from complete. The intention is to add a tide information widget to this page (along with creating a more aesthetically pleasing weather widget), and webcam views of our favorite cruising grounds (Block Island, Newport, Pt. Judith, and any others you want to add) to the cruising home page. There will be an online store from which you can order West Bay gear and a forum where members can post whatever they have to say. Eventually there will be a special version of the site for use on your smartphone.

So, bookmark this page and visit often. We promise that it will seldom be the same as your last visit.

WBYC RACING SKIPPERS MEETING

The WBYC Racing Skippers Meeting is this coming Friday, May 17th at 7PM We will take your entries (both traditional paper entries and online entries) and discuss the format for this year's racing. We hope to add, as long as we get enough entries, a small boat, non-spinnaker class which we will run on a shorter course on the same starting line with last year's spinnaker and non-spinnaker classes. We will also be discussing some of the starting procedures that have caused confusion in past races. The online race entry form and payment system is now posted and full operational. All WBYC races and regattas can be entered and paid for here. Please carefully follow the directions on the page. Printable entry forms are available at the same location for those who prefer to email or snail mail their forms and payment. For now the system is only available through the full version of the website and not the mobile version of the site.

RACERS SEEN OUT PRACTICING

This Monday evening Paul Schmidle's "All In" was out practicing for the upcoming Monday Evening Summer Series. "All In" and her crew took a 3rd place in last year's series. It seems that Paul is determined to move up in the final standings this year.

As of May 15th we have entries for "Climax" and "Thora" for all WBYC races, from "Qing Long" and "All In" for the Monday Evening Summer Series, and from "Coconut" for the four Saturday race package. Racing is only 2 weeks away now and starts with the Spring Tune Up Regatta on Saturday, June 1st. The first gun is at noon. Entry for this race is free to all yachts entered in any WBYC event.

Below are some photos of "All In's" practice session.

 FIRST SAIL OF THE SEASON

The first WBYC member out sailing in Greenwich Cove this year was spotted Thursday evening coming in to pick up his mooring. Reportedly he's already been out several times. Think he's found serenity - now?

HOUSE COMMITTEE SURVEY

The House Committee headed by Matt Aubee has conducted a survey of the membership to gauge what capital improvements would be most desired among our members and their willingness to pitch in with labor and costs. The results of that survey can be found here. Also the House Committee need a big turnout from the membership for the annual Spring Clean Up on Saturday, May 4th. Come as early as you can and stay as long as you can or until the work is done. Next up will be Clubhouse Improvement Day on Saturday, May 18th from 8AM to 5PM. There's lots of work to be done so we need lots of volunteer members.

SAILING THE SIMPLE LIFE

WBYC members, Michele & Joe Boulay are now on their way back. Follow their blog at: http://sailingsimplelife.blogspot.com/2013/04/sea-gypsies.html?spref=fb

WBYC's FORUM

WBYC's Forum is up an running. Members need to register to gain access to the forum. This is a place for discussions of everything that goes on at WBYC as there are forums for activities, cruising, racing and education events. There is also a crew wanted/crew available section. A short time (it could be a matter of minutes or a couple hours depending upon what the webmaster is doing at that time) after you sign up you will receive an email approving your access to the forums. For those WBYC members who are Facebook phobic I can assure you that the forum is a secure place and access is tightly controlled.

EGYC ANNUAL REGATTA

The East Greenwich Yacht Club Race Committee has proposed offering an award to the best performance (finish) by a WBYC yacht if there are a minimum of 10 entries with WBYC affiliation. This race is conducted as a pursuit race with spinnaker, non-spinnaker, cruising, and family classes. If your yacht does not have a PHFR-NB rating certificate Bill Pearson, EGYC Fleet Measurer, will issue one taking into consideration ALL factors that may affect the performance of your yacht including those not normally considered including additional anchors and weights, condition of sail inventory, age of the crew (both too young and too old), air conditioning, deck or davit mounted dinghies, massive stores, fantail mounted helicopters, or any other factors you wish to reveal.

WBYC members who are also EGYC members can indicate their affiliation with both clubs and still be counted as a WBYC entry. Let's turn out for this event.

The regatta date is July 13th and is one of the best events of the summer. Entries can be done online at http://www.egycregatta.com.

BOAT BUILDING

A WBYC member has been busy over the winter doing a little construction. Check it out in the General Section of the WBYC Forum, but you have to sign up first!

I'm posting this because Megan Bamford, daughter of Keri & Mark Bamford (WBYC members) sailed for North Kingstown High School in this event.

NKHS Sailing Heads to Its First Nationals

The NKHS Sailing Team has qualified for its first national competition next week.

The North Kingstown High School sailing team scored a big victory this past weekend as they qualified for the the national championship after tying for first at the O'Day Championship in Greenwich, CT.

The top three teams (NKHS, Cape Cod Academy and Hotchkiss School) from the regional competition will now go on to compete in the x in Chicago during the weekend of May 11.

Leading the team to nationals is a quartet of Jamestown girls – A Fleet skipper Rachel Bryer and crew Fiona Christie and B Fleet skipper Amina Brown and crew Emma Vogel. It's the first time North Kingstown has ever qualified for the nationals, said Coach Andrew Sayre.

Though the Skippers will be competing against 18 schools, the majority of which are private schools which do a fair amount of recruiting, said Sayre.

"We're totally homegrown at NK," said Sayre. "There's no recruiting process. We get what we get."

Unlike many teams they will be competing against, the Skippers sailing program is completely self-funded. Unfortunately, a trip to nationals in a different time zone is not the cheapest excursion

Sayre estimates it will cost the team an additional $4,000 to send the four sailors, four alternates and the two coaches out to Chicago for the competition. Luckily, timing is in the team's favor.

This Saturday, the team is holding its annual nautical yard sale. It's the team's biggest fundraiser and, this year, they're hoping it will help alleviate the cost of a trip to nationals.

"This fundraiser is huge for us, especially with us heading to nationals next week," said Sayre.

Saturday:

The sailors showed up to Belmont Harbor on Saturday morning greeted by sun and flat water, a calm SW wind blowing over Lake Michigan.  A Division hit the water around 9am for a first warning gun at 945. The morning brought some shifty breeze as the front arrived, shifting between SW and NW with big oscillations keeping both the sailors and the Race Committee on their toes.  As the breeze built, it continued to shift right, and the RC had to raise a few postponements to make sure that the course was fair and square.  Around noon, the breeze built dramatically, topping out with at a solid 22 knots, a few gusts reaching 28kts on the race course.  By 230pm, it had settled in the upper teens, gusts in mid-20s from the NNW, and continuing to shift N. A few boats flipped and swamped, but for the most part the fleet was handling the big wind just fine, and so the RC continued on!  During some of the biggest breeze mid-afternoon, Minnetonka’s (Minnetonka, MN) B-division boat’s pintles both broke off mid-race, and so the spare boat was switched into the rotation. As the clouds rolled in and the wind went further right, temperatures dropped and the sailors’ endurance was put to the test. By the end of race 8A, the breeze had died down to around 6kts, and by the time B went out to sail races 7 and 8, the wind had shut off.

So just about every condition was seen today! Winds shifted all the way from SSW to NNE throughout the day, gradually shifting through 180 degrees.  The was fleet able to sail just off of the sea wall at the mouth of Belmont Harbor, and despite the unseasonably chilly temperatures (wind chill in the low 40s), the spectators were able to watch some great racing from shore. Racing was called at 545pm. Three protests, two redresses and one scoring inquiry were filed resulting in one DSQ and one granted redress.  The Antilles School of St. Thomas, USVI sits atop the fleet with 62 points, followed by Cape Cod Academy with 88, and Severn School with 110.

Sunday:

A much colder and windier day on Sunday!  Wind chills were in the mid-30s at the 8am call time as the sailors arrived.  The breeze had piped up from the NW and the lake waves were already starting to build.  By the time the first warning went off for race 7B, the temperatures had improved a bit and the breeze was a solid 15+ knots from the NNW.  As the day progressed, however, the conditions got much more fluky as the wind shifted towards the east, huge oscillations and pressure changes in each race really mixing the fleet up and keeping all of the sailors on their toes.  Antilles and Cape Cod Academy were neck in neck for much of the day, jockeying back and forth in first and second.  Hotchkiss was able to creep up and have a solid hold on 3rd place by midday, followed by Point Loma and Severn falling behind.  With such unpredictable conditions, however, one good or one bad set by any team could really mix up the standings, so teams were fighting hard for their spot until the very end. By the end of the day, the breeze had swung all the way to the east and had settled in between 6-10 knots. The Race Committee remained alert, swinging the course around and keeping it as square as possible.  They were able to get off three sets in B and two in A for a regatta total of twelve races in each set.  Two protests were filed, resulting in one DSQ.

The range of conditions proved to be a true test for all of the sailors at the championship, but ultimately the title of the 2013 ISSA High School Doublehanded National Champions goes to The Antilles School of the USVI, winning by just four points over Cape Cod Academy from Osterville, MA.  The Hotchkiss School from Lakeville, CT finished the event in 3rd place.  Antilles senior Ian Barrows with crews Agustina Barbuto and Ian Coyle dominated A-Division, finishing with just 43 points over the next team with 87. Chase Quinn and crews Tatiana Chui and Elizabeth Pemberton from Cape Cod Academy won B-Division. Congratulations to all of the sailors for a wonderful national championship event!

Thanks to all of the volunteers on the water who helped with Race Committee, mark set, judging, safety and rotation boats, breakdowns and media, and for helping to make the 2013 Mallory Championship such a successful event!
